Inspired by natural features and rustic beauty, Kaylie couldn’t wait to turn her new-build property into her dream home. After comparing a lot of samples, our gorgeous Primrose Herringbone Laminate caught her eye, and her vision became a reality! 

Why did you choose Luxury Flooring?

I chose Luxury Flooring after getting hundreds of samples from hundreds of online stores and all my top 3 choices were from Luxury Flooring; the quality of the flooring for the price was unmatchable.

What was most important to you when designing your room?

The most important thing to me when designing my room was for it not to feel like a typical new-build property. I wanted to have natural-looking features to mix the feel of modern and rustic, and this flooring was the perfect pairing for this design.

What does your home situation look like?

I bought my first home on my own at the end of last year. I’m 35 and single so I live alone but I have a little dog called Foster who visits as he lives with my parents.

How do you prepare your home before hosting?

Before anyone visits, I like to ensure my home is clean and tidy but also welcoming. I usually use it as an excuse to light a new candle as there’s nothing nicer than the smell of a new candle to welcome guests in.

Which rooms do you use for hosting?

The living room is my main hosting room when family and friends come over, and it opens up onto the garden so it’s a nice easy room to use. I’m currently doing my garden up ready for hosting in the summer months.

What qualities were you looking for in your new flooring?

Qualities I wanted from my flooring were easy maintenance, a rustic natural feel and a feature to the room.

Have you ever had a ‘panic moment’ with your floor while entertaining? If so, how did you handle it?

I have in the past spilt tea all over my floor, it was carpeted at the time and the stain never went away. I’m quite clumsy, so it’s likely I’ll have another panic moment in the future for sure, so laminate flooring will hopefully help.

What advice would you give to someone looking to transform their floor?

My advice for anyone looking to transform a room is don’t rush into anything, especially if it’s something that will remain in that room for years to come. I always spend weeks comparing samples before making any final decisions, and so far, it’s worked as I love everything I’ve done to my home.

How has your new floor improved your home?

My floor has changed my home massively and it’s something everyone comments on when coming over. It flows from the front door all the way through into the living room and it is honestly such a lovely feature floor.

Sharon and Rich love nothing more than hosting family and friends and wanted a durable herringbone wood floor for their new kitchen diner. They compared sample after sample until they found a floor that ticked all their boxes – our Painswick Olive Engineered Oak. 

Why did you choose Luxury Flooring?

I’m not kidding when I say we looked at tonnes of flooring. Tonnes and tonnes! Luxury Flooring offered free samples which enabled us to get a really good feel for not only the colour, but texture and quality. The price was fantastic for such  a huge space and more importantly, it was available straight away because we are a bit last minute here!

What was most important to you when designing your room?

It was so important to us that the flooring not only looked good but was practical as well. It’s a high-traffic area and being the kitchen/diner it needs to hold up to the occasional spillage. We are quite relaxed and love to host, so it definitely didn’t want to be anything that wasn’t going to stand up to a good party!

What does your home situation look like?

Although there are only two of us here, it’s a full-house policy with regular gatherings with family and friends. 100% shoes-on kind of rules! I can’t bear to be precious over anything which is why the flooring works so well for us. It’s low maintenance with high visual impact. Can’t ask for more from a floor.

How do you prepare your home before hosting?

I love an excuse to go all out on flowers and candles. Nothing stiff and rigid, cosy and chilled is more our scene. Rich is an exceptional cook, so he’ll knock something up, no one ever goes hungry here and I’m pretty certain our drinks cabinet could cater for most thirsts.

Which rooms do you use for hosting?

When we host it is 100% of the time centred around food which is why we chose to take a wall down to create a kitchen diner. We managed to find a bargain 10-seater table and nothing gives me more joy than when it’s full and the sound of laughter, music and the chinking of glasses fills the room.

What qualities were you looking for in your new flooring?

It was absolutely necessary that the flooring could withstand being in a kitchen. You could argue that there are more practical options, such as tiles, but we really wanted to unite the space as a whole. Tiles just didn’t appeal to us as we weren’t able to have underfloor heating. As Rich was laying the flooring himself, it needed to be fairly straightforward, he did an amazing job.

Have you ever had a ‘panic moment’ with your floor while entertaining? If so, how did you handle it?

We had a ‘panic’ moment when we fitted the kitchen, for sure. We dragged the fridge-freezer across the room thinking we had protectors on the bottom of it. They came off mid-way and the floor was scratched. Luckily, we managed to lightly hand sand it out. I’m the world’s clumsiest person so I’m pretty certain it’s got a tough life ahead!

What advice would you give to someone looking to transform their floor?

Really drill down into how you will use the space. In my opinion, a home is to be lived in, so don’t buy something you’re too frightened to move on. Luckily, there are so many good options for practical and pretty flooring.

Once you’ve narrowed down your search, consider asking for a few sample boards of the same flooring so you can lay it out. This really helped us make our final decision, and sometimes there are variations in pattern, colour etc.

Consider the furniture you are putting on it. For example, use protective pads on chairs to avoid scratching and consider whether your furniture will clash. We have a lot of wooden furniture, so it was important to find flooring that was harmonious with our existing furniture.

How has your new floor improved your home?

The flooring was a huge transformation! It helped connect the space together whilst retaining a rustic feel. It also feels so much warmer! The tones of the wood help. We love it so much we plan to run the same floor in our hallway to really create a flow.

Jo and Ashley have been renovating their 18th century cottage room-by-room and most recently on the list was their daughter’s art room. Having loved the light herringbone floor in their previous property, they wanted to recreate the look and our charming Painswick Chartreux Engineered Oak ticked all their boxes.

We were very impressed with the quality of the sample provided by Luxury Flooring and the texture, matte appearance and tone were exactly what we were looking for, with a reasonable price tag.

What was most important to you when designing your room?

The room is essentially our daughter’s art room, so a practical floor was needed – being easy to clean and wipe paint off was imperative.

What does your home situation look like?

We are a family of five, my husband and I and our three daughters along with Aubrey and Rodney, our cocker spaniels. We are approaching three years in our 18th century cottage and have been renovating one room at a time.

What qualities were you looking for in your new flooring?

The right tone of oak and the finish needed to appear hard-wearing and be easy to clean and maintain.

What advice would you give to someone looking to transform their floor?

I would always consider ‘wear and tear’ for high-traffic areas. Look for flooring which is easy to clean, scratch-proof and that will age well over the coming years.

Lee and Curtis wanted to bring colour and character to their new-build home and create a space that showcased their personalities. After comparing a lot of flooring samples, they found their perfect match – the Painswick Owl Oak.

Why did you choose Luxury Flooring?

After ordering what seemed like hundreds of different flooring samples that either weren’t great quality or were too thin, we came across Luxury Flooring and their engineered hardwood floors. We ordered a few different samples but we’d taken a shine to the ‘Painswick Owl Oak’. The samples came the next day and were exactly as shown on the website, so it was a no-brainer.

What was most important to you when designing your room?

What’s most important to us is ensuring that the room feels balanced. By this, we mean that the room feels proportioned in its sizes and that the colours, patterns and textures that we add complement each other well.

In our new-build living room, the initial layout wasn’t ideal. The room was long and narrow but it was lacking a focal point. To remedy this, we installed a media unit to house the TV and used a combination of colours on different walls to pull the room together.

What does your home situation look like?

At the moment it’s myself, my boyfriend and our Miniature Dachshund.

What qualities were you looking for in your new flooring?

Since we like to entertain, we were looking for a floor that would be durable and withstand whatever we throw at it. The engineered hardwood is perfect because it can be sanded down up to 4 times if we ever need to.

What advice would you give to someone looking to transform their floor?

The best advice I could give is just to throw caution to the wind and go for the flooring you love. So many people warned us about fitting hardwood floors throughout the entire ground floor of our house; they said it would make the house feel ‘cold’. I couldn’t disagree with this more, our ground floor feels so warm and inviting (even in winter, it’s not like walking on tiles).

Did any trends inspire your interior choices?

We tend to lean towards a mid-century modern/Scandi style for our interiors. This is an amalgamation of both mine and Lee’s tastes. I love Victorian houses with dark moody interiors and delicate patterns, whereas Lee likes modern bright interiors. I do feel like we’ve found a nice balance between our two styles though.

  

How has your new floor improved your home?

Everyone compliments our floor, it’s so striking while also remaining quite neutral. If we wanted to, we could quite easily change the entire colour scheme downstairs and I can almost guarantee that any other colour scheme would still work. The flooring strikes the perfect balance between beauty and practicality.

How did you decide on the colours and styles?

I studied art for many years and so I’ve always been quite creative. However, we took inspiration from other houses on Instagram, home magazines/catalogues as well as inspiration from our own tastes.

When it came to deciding upon colours and furniture etc, we found the best way to do this was by using mood boards. We would look on Instagram for how colours and flooring looked in other people’s homes – it’s always useful to do this because sometimes it’s hard to see true colours if photos are edited.

With anything creative though, it’s a process of trial and error. We are already seeing projects we’ve completed but want to change slightly. So don’t be afraid to play about with colour or even textures and try to have fun while you’re doing it.

With climate change looming, it’s never been more important to be environmentally conscious. The ‘throwaway’ mentality of the past has been cast aside in favour of reuse and recycling systems. Plastic bags aren’t automatically given in supermarkets, and recyclable packaging is slowly becoming the norm. But what about your flooring?  

If you’re investing in a new floor, you might wonder what to do with your old one. Thankfully, there are a few options for recycling your old hardwood flooring. Let’s dive in!  

Benefits of recycling old wood flooring

While it may be quick and easy to take the old wood planks to the dump, there are several benefits to recycling your pre-loved floor.  

The most obvious one is preventing unnecessary waste. A recent report from Packaging News has shown that the amount of waste sent to UK landfills is gradually falling. But to combat climate change and prevent further environmental damage, it’s important to reuse or recycle as much as possible.  

Another benefit of recycling your old flooring is that it can help you save money or even make money!  

How to recycle old wood flooring

Recycling your wood flooring isn’t as simple as placing it in your recycling at home. But good news, there are plenty of recycling points that do accept wood products. To find one near you, you can use the Recycle Now website. Keep in mind that most wood flooring is finished with either an oil or a lacquer, so ask your recycling centre if they accept finished wood.  

Can’t find a local recycling point that will take your floor? Don’t panic, there are a few other options for recycling old floorboards.  

Create something new

Upcycling has surged in popularity recently, with Instagram and TikTok teeming with videos of crafty creators transforming tired furniture or worn-out objects into something entirely different.  

If you’re new to DIY, start with something small like a coat rack made from a single old floorboard. Simply screw a few sturdy hooks into the board and secure it to the wall.  

Another beginner-friendly option is to make some coasters with your leftover floorboards. Use a saw to cut the planks into even squares or rectangles, then use waterproof furniture spray paint to give them a fresh new look! These coasters are perfect for use around the house, but they also make great gifts for friends and family.  

Once you’ve built up your skills and confidence, you could try something more challenging, like building a bookshelf or a headboard.   

If you’ve fallen down an upcycling rabbit hole on social media, you’ll have noticed that lots of DIYers are selling their upcycled pieces and making a profit. So, if you don’t fancy making something for yourself with your old floor, why not create something you could sell to someone else? You’ll make some extra cash, and your old flooring won’t go to waste – it’s a win-win!

Donate it

If you want to recycle your old flooring but don’t have the time or patience for DIY, donating it is a fantastic alternative. Many charities and community centres will be grateful for a donation of excess flooring and it’s likely they’ll find a use for it, either by using it themselves or by giving it to someone in need.  

A school may also be open to reusing your old wood floor but it’s worth asking before you turn up with a boot full of floorboards! 

Safety precautions for recycling wood flooring

Before you start ripping up your old floor or begin any DIY projects, please make sure you’ve got the right protective equipment handy. We recommend wearing gloves to help you avoid splinters and if you’re sawing or sanding the wood, you’ll need a mask to stop yourself inhaling any sawdust.

Our Tree Planting Journey 

Climate change has never been a hotter topic, and as a business, we’re always looking for new ways to do our bit for the planet.  

Tree planting seemed like an obvious place to begin, and in December 2022, we launched our Plant a Tree Christmas initiative with the help of our partner, Ecologi. We planted a tree for every order placed throughout the month, and by the end of December 2022, the number of trees planted during the project had reached over 1,000.  

In June 2023, we ran a week-long initiative for World Environment Day, planting 549 trees.  

As both projects were a success, we decided to make tree planting a regular thing at Luxury HQ. In April this year, we began planting 1 tree with every flooring order from March 2024 onwards, with the help of our partner, Carma.  

Total Number of Trees Planted

21^st March was International Day of Forests, and to celebrate, we planted an additional tree for every flooring order we received on the day, which brought the total number of trees we’ve planted to 2,571. You can see the trees we planted with our partner, Ecologi, here, and what we’ve planted with our partner, Carma, is shown below.  

How Tree Planting Helps the Environment

Reforestation (planting new trees to replace those which have been lost) is one of the best ways to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and prevent climate change. Climate specialists have recently revealed that there are more areas with room for trees than they originally thought. This means that if enough trees are planted, CO2 in the atmosphere could be reduced by 25% and the risk of climate change may decrease too.

Debbie and Liam were renovating their Victorian terraced home and wanted a floor that would make their kitchen feel cosy and inviting, while still being durable enough for their growing family! After a little help from our free sample service, they chose our Painswick Sienna Engineered Oak.

Why did you choose Luxury Flooring?

We chose Luxury Flooring as there was a great variety of affordable flooring to choose from. We found it really easy to order samples to make sure we were 100% happy with our final choice. We were also looking for engineered oak with a thicker wear layer and Luxury Flooring was the best option for us in terms of style and price.

What was most important to you when designing your room?

The most important thing for us was to have a durable floor that feels warm and inviting. Our kitchen is a very high-traffic area and used at all times of the day, so the floor needed to be durable but also easy to clean with a baby and a dog around. 

What does your home situation look like?

I (Debbie) live with my husband, Liam, our 3-month-old daughter, Heidi and our toy poodle, Monty in our Victorian terraced home in Derby. We bought the house over 3 years ago and have been slowly renovating room by room. The biggest project in our home has been the kitchen extension. 

How do you prepare your home before hosting?

We love to cook when hosting and before friends or family arrive we like to light candles, spray room sprays, light the log burner and turn on lamps instead of ceiling lights to make the house feel as cosy and inviting as possible.

Which rooms do you use for hosting?  

We use the kitchen and dining room for hosting. We use the kitchen when people arrive as we have a small sofa area as well as island seating which is perfect for hosting while having drinks and cooking. We then move to the dining room to eat.

What qualities were you looking for in your new flooring?  

We were looking for a warm, natural-looking floor that complements the style of our kitchen and works well with the original tiles that link the kitchen to the hallway. 

  

Have you ever had a ‘panic moment’ with your floor while entertaining? If so, how did you handle it? 

Before our new flooring, we had a very light-coloured vinyl and had a few red wine spillages that stained. Our new flooring has had plenty of spills and still looks brand new.

What advice would you give to someone looking to transform their floor?

I would advise people to consider what time of day they intend to use their room and order samples to try in different areas throughout the day to see how different lighting makes them appear.

How has your floor improved your home?  

Our new flooring has helped us to tie the old part of the house to the new part seamlessly and feels like it has been here for years. It also works perfectly for busy family life.

Edd and Emma wanted a beautiful herringbone engineered wood floor to bring warmth to the living area of their Victorian home. After comparing all of their favourite samples, they chose our Painswick Paradise Engineered Oak to transform their space.   

Why did you choose Luxury Flooring?

We originally came across Luxury Flooring on Instagram and were initially drawn in by the massive variety of options they could offer. We knew we wanted to do Herringbone flooring with engineered wood, so the great range of options gave us plenty to choose from, and the reviews of how easy it was to lay the flooring were key! The free samples were super helpful in narrowing down the colour and finish we wanted, and it was so easy to get all of the products we needed from one place with quick delivery.

What was most important to you when designing your room?

The living space in the house felt cold and a bit bleak, so we wanted to create something cosy and welcoming, as it’s the space we spend the most time in. We stripped the room back, removed the brick fire surround, the fitted shelving and the old carpets to take it to a blank canvas, and took it from there!

What does your home situation look like?

It’s just the two of us, but we’re desperate for a dog, which is another reason wood flooring was our preference over carpets!

Which rooms do you use for hosting?  

Now we have the space, we love to host! The downstairs of the house is semi-open-plan, so we can be prepping in the kitchen while our guests are in the dining room, but the main reception room is at the front of the house. This is the space we spend the most time preparing when we host, making sure the lighting is right, candles are lit, the cushions are plumped, and everyone can relax comfortably. We hate a quiet house, so there’s always some background music!

What qualities were you looking for in your new flooring?  

Being a Victorian house, the original floorboards were not 100% level, so we wanted engineered wood that was easy to install to help us with any minor bumps! The reception room also sits directly above the lower ground reception room, so we wanted to ensure the new flooring insulated the floors and felt a little more solid than before!

  

Have you ever had a ‘panic moment’ with your floor while entertaining? If so, how did you handle it? 

Thankfully, our guests have been pretty well-behaved! But there have been a few occasions where we might have slid a coaster under a glass popped down on the floor!

What advice would you give to someone looking to transform their floor?

We knew what we wanted to achieve for the living room, but it all felt a bit overwhelming knowing where to start as we wanted to change everything. It also always looks worse before it gets better! But you have to trust the process.

How has your floor improved your home?  

The room is unrecognisable compared to when we started! The floor makes the room warm and welcoming and now complements the house’s overall period style. We know that when we change the flooring in other parts of the house, we’ll come back to Luxury Flooring!
